Due to the economic boom and political surveillance of the 1950 s, American society witnessed a great number of male subjects constructing themselves in conformity with dominant social ideologies, so much so that it inspired a leitmotif in American literature of that period. Within the framework of Althusser's ideological critique, this paper interrogates the identity construction and performance of such "conforming" males in several novels of the 1950 s, discussing these characters' corporeal invisibility, domestication and dissimilation to identify the restricting effect of social ideology on the construction of gender identity.
