The use of Chinese in Mandalay,Burma and its causes

通过田野调查得知,缅甸曼德勒市华人华语使用现状表现为:华语能力相对母语即祖籍地方方言更强,不同年龄段华人的华语能力存在明显的代际差异,华人对华语有强烈的认同感,华语是华人族群重要的交际工具。这些现状的形成与华人的地域构成、中缅关系发展等因素有关。

An analysis is carried out based on the first- hand data of the field study on the use of Mandarin of the overseas Chinese in Mandalay. The characteristics of the use are collected： The Mandarin level of the overseas Chinase is comparatively higher than that of their mother tongue. However,there is a clear distinction between different generations; the overseas Chinese have a good sense of identity of Mandarin in that it is an important means of communication for them. Although people from different ancestral homes speak Mandarin at a different level,Yunnan Chinese can speak it relatively better. Meanwhile,the further analysis of the causes of these characteristiacs is also included in the paper.
