Two Pragmatic Approaches to Scientific Representation

巴斯·范·弗拉森和罗纳德·吉尔是当代著名的两位科学哲学家。两人都将科学理论理解为由作为非语言实体的模型集合所构成,都在表征问题上突出科学主体的作用并因而选择了语用学进路。然而,分析表明,他们在模型本体论、科学表征以及对待科学实在论的态度等诸多方面存在根本差别。

Both Bas Van Fraassen and Ronald N. Giere are famous contemporary philosophers of science. Both hold that a scientific theory consists of a collection of models as non-linguistic entities,and take the pragmatic approach which emphasizes the role of scientific agents. However,analysis shows that there are fundamental differences between their accounts of the ontology of scientific models and of scientific representation,and their attitudes towards scientific realism.
