《艺文类聚》作为保存较完整的大型类书,其价值和意义尤为明显。它征引的子部文献价值甚大,然而对其整体研究较少,在子部文献中,小说类所占比重最大,其中《列仙传》、《神仙传》、《穆天子传》、《汉武帝故事》以及《汉武帝内传》为代表的神仙传记类小说,对后世小说等影响颇大。对它们的成书年代、卷数、作者以及内容的考证,能给予以后相关研究以借鉴。
