The Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of Thornton Wilder's early masterpieces, is composed of three interrelated "love-in-vain" romance stories, which are highly alle- gorical in their own right. This essay argues that Wilder's allegoricalness in The Bridge is different from realistic fictions nor is it the same as a religious fable endorsing Puritan traditions. Rather, with inherent ambiguities and openness, Wilder allegorizes "unre- quited love" in such a way as to convey his aesthetic belief in the transcendence of Love as well as an ambivalent attitude to Christian faiths.
