From 1903, there was a cosmopolitan club movement in American colleges and universities which aimed at unifying students from different countries and promoting cosmopolitanism and pacifism. In this movement, Chinese students who studied in America participated from the beginning, and played very significant roles. Chinese students accepted the spirits of cosmopolitan club based on inclusive rules and tried to merge the Chinese with the West. Especially, they understood cosmopolitanism through Chinese traditional Datong (great harmony) ideal. Many Chinese students formed a special type of national identity, which went beyond narrow nationalism in some certain, while they never forgot their identity as a person from the weak country.
