At the early stage of the Anti-Japanese War, Chen Cheng, being the frontline commander-in-chief of KMT＇s 3 rd theater, participated in the whole process of the Battle of Shanghai. In his diary, Chen made detailed records of the military deployment, the strategic adjustment and the overall development of the entire battle. They serve as valuable historical data and enable us to grasp the process and deployment of the Battle of Shanghai, to clarify the relationship between KMT senior military officers and government officials and the battlefield, to understand the strong will and resolution of the Chinese army in the war, and also to recognize the various problems in both KMT military and government circles.
