中国铁路工程文明源自西方重要的"物器"文化并承载着工业文明精神。以牵引动力方式为分期标准看,中国铁路工程文明展示出蒸汽机车的"中西文化"碰撞,内燃、电力机车的规范的"科层制",动车组"和谐"的"技术理性"和磁悬浮嵌入"国际化"交通枢纽的历史发展过程,由此推动了中国城市化和工业化的快速发展。这个过程与其说是人类创造"人工界"的科技理性主义的胜利,倒不如说是人类追求"自由"的人本主义的胜利。中国铁路的变迁及其所蕴含的"现代性"的工业精神,即理性主义和人本主义精神,在推动中国从传统农业文明走向工业文明的社会变迁中,发挥了不可替代的作用。

The civilization of China＇s railway engineering has originated from the important‘object＇culture in the west and possessed the spirit of industrial civilization. Taking the railway traction mode as the staging criteria,the civilization of China＇s railway engineering revealed the historical developing processes. They are the cultural collision between China and the west in the time of steam locomotive,the bureaucracy of normative culture in the time of diesel and electric locomotives,harmonious technical rationality in the time of the electric multiple unit,and the embedded international transportation hubs in the time of the maglev. It is the victory of humanism in the human pursuit of ＂freedom＂rather than the victory of technological rationalist in the human creation of ‘artificial world＇. Meanwhile,the cultural changes of China＇s railway engineering,together with its industrial spirit of modernity,namely the spirit of rationalism and humanism,shows the cultural power of engineering in the social change from traditional agricultural civilization to industrial civilization in China.
