The attractiveness of rail system is influenced by numerous built environment (BE) factors, including such spatial factors as distance, building density, land use diversity, accessibility and the maturity level of pedestrian system. A study on the residential unit in the MTR station area of Hong Kong shows that compact urban morphology has been a basic feature of higher passenger volume stations. Based on the outcomes of research on Hong Kong, a comparative study on Shenzhen validates that the compact station space may influence people's intention to choose metro travels. In addition, this paper summarizes factors that affect the formation of compact spatial morphology from planning principle, land development strategy, pedestrian system and so on at different periods of rail system construction.
