Search for the Actual Self in Hesitation, an Analysis of the Protagonist of Hairball by Human Psyche

Margaret Atwood＇s short story Hairball features a woman who experiences various confusion and struggle, in order to search for a living space and her self-identity in the man-centered society, and finally succeeds in the conquest of herself and returning to the original. From the perspective of Freud＇s three- level personality structure, that is, id, ego, and superego, an analysis of the protagonist＇s mental journey, in which Kat＇s mind undergoes a change from confused ＂id＂ to the victory of superego and returning to peace, indicates that Kat＇s self-examination allows her to set female consciousness in exactly the right place and endows such consciousness with dignity.
