Abstract This is an introduction to the new research area of the evolutionary computation. First, the history of evolutionary computation is described. Then, the evolutionary computation from imitating life, a very important component of the evolution, as well as the genetic algorithms are introduced. Another component is the evolutionary computation from simulating physical phenomena, such as annealing process. Some research directions and important references in this field are mentioned.
