Abstract The recent development of tile Lattice gas automata method and its exte nsion to the Lattice Boltzmann method. which are based on the kinetic theory of mole cule, have provided new computational schemes for st'mulating fluid dynamics. In this paper, principles and theoretical bases of the lattice gas automata and the lattice Boltzmann model are investigated.
