On the Analysis of the Setting of Punishment in The Scarlet Letter with Foucault's theory of Power-Discourse

本文以米歇尔·福柯的权力话语观对《红字》开篇海丝特·白兰的在监狱外示众场景进行了分析,文章从监狱、刑台、围观人群、牧师、海丝特本人的话语等方面进行了分析,认为权力是一种关系力量,话语是权力的工具,同时能够加强权力。海丝特的示众是法律、宗教、道德等多种权力力量综合作用的结果。

Based on Michelle Foucault＇s theory of power-discourse, the thesis analyzes the setting of punishment to Hester outside the prison. It explains the existence of prison, the scaffold, the discourse of crowd, the priest and Hester in the novel, and holds the idea that power is a kind of relationship, and discourse is the tool of power, and can reinforce it. The punishment to Hester is the result of law, religion, and moral.
