Hair follicle stem cells( HFSCs) normally differentiate into keratinocytes, sebocytes, and transient amplifying progenitor cells. HFSCs have the capacity of rapid proliferation, and thus can provide the basis for establishing a putative source of stem cells for cell therapy. The first section of this review describes the location, culture, and molecular markers of hair follicle stem cells in order to provide a powerful reference for the identification and isolation of cells. The second section of this review presents the discovery and molecular function of Noggin gene which regulates the proliferation and differentiation of HFSCs,and summarizes the advances in regulatory effect of Noggin on HFSCs through BMP signaling pathway.
