Undoubtedly, Gertrude Stein has been rightly regarded as one of the great Anglo-American modernist poets. But most of the academic findings are about her creative techniques as she stands as one extreme of radical poetic experiment, and her historical value as an important forerunner of the modernist movement has been ignored. From the perspective of aesthetic modernity, Stein's radical formal experiment, to a great extent, reveals some core poetic ideas of the Anglo- American modernist poetry at its early stage, and her poetic practice, together with the work of E. Pound, T. S. Eliot, T. E. Hume, promotes the prosperity of that poetry movement. Moreover, her persistence in poetic experiment is a claim for the poet's self- identification and pursuit of freedom, as well as a revolt against the existing social order.
