Objective To understand the contamination status and health risks of heavy metals in vegetables from the coal mining area. Methods The contents of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg and Pb in eight types of vegetables(total 56 samples) collected from Huai'nan coal mining area, were investigated. And the human health risks were assessed by using health risk assessment model. Results The results showed that the contents of Cu, Cd and Pb exceeded the standard limits in some vegetables. Based on the Nemero pollution indexes, the levels of metals in the studied vegetables were within the safe or cautionary levels( P 综1),excluding garlic shoot moderately polluted(P 综 =2.96). The non-carcinogenic risk from exposure to Cu in vegetable to local residents exceeded the acceptable level, and Cr in vegetable was also unacceptable for children. The total risks from exposure to the multiple metals in vegetables exceeded the acceptable levels for both adults and children. Conclusion As a whole, low to moderate metal pollution in vegetable is considered to occur in Huai 'nan coal mining area. However, the total risks from exposure to the multiple metals in vegetables should be great concerned.
