The degradation rate of the roughage is highly depended on the activity of the rumen microorganisms.In this paper we describe the structure of the roughage fiber,the composition of the rumen cellulolytic microorganisms and relevant enzymes.The possible degradation mechanism of the fiber in the rumen and some potential manipulation methods to improve its degradation rate are discussed in details.
