Western philosophy is the direct source of Marxist philosophy.Correctly speaking,Marxist philosophy is the direct successor of two thousand years' western philosophy but not simply that of classical German philosophy. It is the succession and development of the whole western philosophy. Although Marxist philosophy is a kind of western philosophy yet it developed itself very different from any other western philosophy.First, because it was born in the socialist movement of west-European workers,Marxist philosophy had the characteristics of practice, militancy and class.Second, Marxist philosophy strives to be scientific. It certainly has speculation and argumentation, but it also emphasizes the practical base, demonstration and objectivity of philosophy. Marxist philosophy always insists on materialism while the mainstream of contemporary western philosophy is idealism. Third,Marxist philosophy concerns the mass and people,so it is easy to be popularized. As contemporary western philosophy is completely the philosophy for elite,it is far from the mass and difficult to be popularized. In the 20th century, contemporary Marxist philosophy and contemporary western philosophy both had their strongpoint and shortcoming. As for Marxist philosophy, its strongpoint is insisting on practice, science and mass;insisting on dialectical materialism and historical materialism. Its shortcoming is neglecting the investigation and development of departmental philosophy,so it could not construct its fully contemporary formation. As for contemporary western philosophy, the case is nicely a reversal. So Marxist philosophy and contemporary western philosophy could be mutually complementary. And this mutual complementing has been quite evident during the development of philosophy in China since 1980s.
