As one of the outstanding writers in 20 th century, Jean Rhys has all along possessed her unique way in writing novels. Wide Sargasso Sea is no exception. The thesis argues that, on the one hand,Rhys＇ full application of gothic elements, vivid description of sorts of nightmares and fears perfectly inherits the traditions of female gothic. On the other hand, she also provides the readers the chance to get an all-round understanding of the complexity of human beings which developed the male images of a pure＂scoundrel＂ in tradition female gothic novel. What＇s more, the open-ending of the novel, which is different from the traditional happy one, makes people spare endless pondering on it.
