Background Now more patients need ventilation, they have different conditions and stages of their illness included pulmonary heterogeneity, they need individual ventilation settings. Objective Discuss the clinical application of some nonconventional ventilation modes and the effects on lung protection. Content This review collected the related articles about nonconventional ventilation modes, introduced their theory and benefits, drawbacks, analyzed the clinical application especially their roles in alleviating lung injury. There are more choices for long time ventilation patients with those nonconventional ventilation modes. Trend Nonconventional ventilation modes not only have clinical application but also probably new alternatives of lung protective strategy.
