Renovating Laobaidu Wharf Coal Warehouse A Temporary Construction between Visionary Architecture and Built Form

This article introduces Atelier Deshaus＇s recent renovation of the Laobaidu Wharf Coal Warehouse. The warehouse was designed to accommodate an urban renewal exhibition during the Shanghai Urban Space Arts Season in 2015. The half- demolished structure of the coal warehouse is carefully preserved, and its potential for spatial experience is stimulated by several small spaces added to it. The impressive, unusual richness of the architectural space in the renovated coal warehouse suggests that ＂temporary architecture＂ is not only a strategic method for urban renewal, but could also be a critical practice in architecture.
