Perched atop a ridge on the outskirt of the historic city center of Castelrotto in Northern Italy, the house splits into two volumes to open-up and look out over the outlying valley. These twin wooden elements are joined together at the hip and are tightly wedged between the house where the client, the artist Hubert Kostner grew up and the neighboring traditional wood and stone structures. At first glance, the project seems to break its quaint surroundings, but witha closer look, MoDus Architects have lithely combined traditional vocabularies with a resounding contemporary architecture. The article narrates the beginnings of the project and traces the trajectory of new projects that the Kostner House and Studio project have jumpstarted, bringing to the forefrent the capacity of architecture to generate ideas and trigger unexpected forms of cultural production.
