In the Maonan language, initials ？b and ？d correlate with lower-register tones. This phenomenon can be explained as follows： the two initials have evolved from typical inaplosives to reduced implosives, thus entailing derivative tones, which in turn merge with the original lower-register tones. Moreover, this paper discusses the phonological status of the implosives in the Kam-Tai languages.
