Objective To explore the relationship of isokinetic muscle strengths of knee flexors and extensors with BMI in elderly women with knee osteoarthritis(KOA). Methods Forty seven elderly women, including 25 KOA patients and 22 healthy people, were tested by isokinetic dynamometry. The absolute peak torque(a PT)and relative peak torque(r PT)of knee were recorded. Results a PT of extensor was significant smaller in KOA women than healthy people(P〈0.05). Both r PT of flexor and extensor in KOA women were significantly smaller than health people(P〈0.05),and the ratio of flexion r PT to extension r PT in KOA women was significantly greater than health people(P〈0.05). There were significant negative relationships between BMI and r PT of flexors and extensors in both groups. Conclusion Knee osteoarthritis could reduce quadriceps and hamstring muscle strengths in the elderly women, and significantly affected the knee joint stability. With increasing of BMI,the knee muscle strength of the elderly women reduces, especially those with knee osteoarthritis.
