Mapping Tibetan Studies in the United States: History, Current Situation and Future

In this paper, the author will draw a picture about history and current situation of Tibetan Studies in the United States, and clarify the mentor-disciple relationship among American Tibetologists. He argues that path-dependency in Tibetan Studies has resulted into the hegemony of Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the field. Furthermore,he attempts to evaluate the future of Tibetan Studies in the United States, and suggests that the dominant position of Tibetan Buddhist Studies will not be changed in a short time.
