The Great Canal was initially opened in the Yuan dynasty. Along with its becoming the main trunk of the north-south communication in the Yuan, Ming and Qing periods, the Hui people originally resided in northwest and the cities in south of the Yangtze River began to migrate to the regions along the Great Canal. Step by step, mosques were established there continually and Hui people became the important member of the Canal business, which in turn formed a special Hui business circle and activated the Islamic revival movement.
