作为纪录片研究领域不同于国内纪录片的重要研究对象,海外华人独立纪录片有着特定的内涵。将这一对象置于中华民族海外移民的背景下考察,可以发现,海外华人独立纪录片人通过族群记忆强化其移民身份,通过"中国题材"实现创作上的回归,而飘泊、离散的生活又将其推向事实上的无国、无家状态。海外华人独立纪录片人这种在东方与西方、母国与居住国之间的夹缝中生存的身份特征,为其纪录片赋予了超越国家与民族边界的全球视野。
