从汉代称谓来看,"大刘"之"大",与彰显姓氏的显赫关联不大,它主要与年辈相关。汉代称"大"者,为父辈人物,印主刘贺为宣帝叔父辈,特制此印以隐约表达自己的身份。此外,此印有着"《春秋》笔法",背后反映着武、宣时代的政治问题。具体说来,其一,"大"有大宗、正统的指向,由此,"大刘"隐隐有着争皇家正统的考量;其二,"大"有昌大、兴旺及壮大之义,并与刘贺当年的封地及身体状况有重要关联。
