In the history of western novel, the characters and the roles they play in the literary works differ greatly in different phases of the development of traveling novels. To be exact, those characters experience a whole complex process from the margin to the center of the story, from the subordinate position to the dominant position, and then to the position of being dissolved and ignored gradually. Accordingly, the roles they played in the novels are also different in the aspects of their structural function, narrative function and the function of carrying and representing ideology. Through studying the status and function of the characters and their roles, we can not only understand the authors＇ talents in artistic expression, but more importantly, we can learn the complexity and diversity of humanity and the world by means of t ideological function of the novels.
