As one of the most outstanding American postmodernist writers, Robert Coover has written many characteristic metafictional works, which show his profound insight into the relationship between various fictional systems and the real world. His short story "The Door" : A Prologue of Sorts demonstrates the author' s endeavor to subvert the narrative models in classical fairytales, to smash the myth residue and create better fiction. "The Door" is not only a fairytale about fairytales, but a fable ushering readers into Coover' s fictional world. By way of parody, it combines satire and criticism into literature to impel readers to contemplate literary works, life and reality.
