Hsueh Tou Ch'ung Hsien, an eminent Sung dynasty Ch'an master, was known as the fourth patriarch and reviver of the Yun Men school. Under the guidance of Han Dabo and Chih Men Kuang Tso, Ch'ung Hsien had become enlightened, and his actual experience of enlightenment was generally recognized by Ch'an masters. His basic insight is that unconditioned dharmas is the essence of Ch'an mind and universe, which is timeless and placeless. All animate and inanimate beings are intrinsically unconditioned dharmas, and this dharma( enlightened life) is abundantly inherent in each individual. The principle of practice is to get rid of attaching thoughts and running after an outward object. When you are neither abiding by nor clinging to them, the ego-attachment is abandoned, and something external appear because of inner support. When a mind is free from all form, ultimate reality is revealed to you. About teaching trait, Ch'ung Hsien was good at using unpredictable words and unexpected behaviors to make people wake up, to clear minds and to face reality directly. Meanwhile, Hsueh Tau had emphasized most on the work with kung an. A set of one hundred kung an, "public cases" of ancient events, was compiled by Hsueh Tou. He pointed out the import of each story with verses and additional remarks of his own as aid and guidance for observation and contemplation.
