The cause of insomnia is complicated, which related to dysfunction of five zang viscera, but the main cause of this disease is dysfumction of heart storing spirit. The article traces the origin that insomnia caused by dysfunction of heart storing spirit and analyzes the ancient physicians' under-standing on insomnia caused by dysfunction of heart storing spirit. And the article has cleared that the basic etiology of insomnia caused by dysfunction of heart storing spirit is dystrophy or disturbing of heart-vitality caused by the deficiency of qi, blood, yin, yang and the evil invasion of phlegm, fire, stasis. And its core pathogenesis is spirt-can't-enter-heart and the treatment is mainly based on mourishing the heart, eliminating pathogenic factors, tranquilization.
