Essentials of ZHANG Xi-chun's application of Gypsum Fibrosum

张锡纯溯源《神农本草经》,根据临床应用石膏的丰富经验,质疑石膏药性非大寒而为微寒,并亲自在家人身上进行试验,认为石膏具有凉而能散、透表解肌功效。扩大其主治范围与适应症,治疗内外妇儿五官各科疾病多达72种,灵活应用含有石膏经方,并根据临床病情创制许多石膏新方,重视石膏配伍,拓展给药方法;尤其是喜欢大剂重用,每日用量多达1两-12两之间,其中治疗温热火毒病证每日用6两者较为多见。详细记录石膏治验医案,以案证论,理论结合临床,值得后辈效仿。

Based on the theory in Shennong's Classic of the Materia Medica and rich clinical experience in the application of Gypsum Fibrosum, ZHANG Xi-chun questioned that Gypsum Fibrosum was slight cold rather than severe cold in nature. He conducted experiments on his family members and reached the conclusion that its property of coolness had the effects of dispersing and dispelling the exterior pathogens from the muscle. With extended range of indications, it was applicable up to 72 kinds of diseases including exogenous and internal injuries, gynecological, pediatric, and ENT diseases. He flexibly applied classical prescriptions and created new prescriptions including Gypsum Fibrosum, valued compatibility of medicines, expanded the administration methods, and especially preferred to use large dose of Gypsum Fibrosum which reached to 50g-100 g reflecting in the treatment of warm-heat and fire-toxicity syndrome(300g each day). ZHANG kept detailed records of the medical cases treated with Gypsum Fibrosum and combined the theories with clinical practice, which was worth being followed by later generations.
