Every country has to confront social contradictions and dispute settlement, and this is even truer of China in its current phase of reform and transition. Introducing the idea of the rule of law into the examination of dispute resolution and social governance from the perspective of social sciences, with an emphasis on ＂knowing society in law and improving law in society＂ is the basic research theme of the special papers we have organized. Using social scientific concepts, theories and methods for empirical research on the social environment in which a country＇s legal system is situated can provide targeted analytical tools and decision- making evidence that serve institutional transformation and legal reform in that country. This provides supplementation and innovation in traditional jurisprudence, synthesizing pertinent knowledge in economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, statistics, psychology, etc. Employing cross-disciplinary methods helps us discover behavioral laws and normative development in the real world, enabling us to find ways and means of settling legal issues outside the law.
