The epidemic of obesity has been the focus of much medical attention, social discussion and policy debate in the West. Through insightful studies published in journals dedicated to this field, we have learnt not only that obesity is a disease, but that it is a complex disease that can lead to metabolic derangement, poor quality of life and reduced life expectancy. The burden of disease has significant cost implications to health care systems and according to some estimates, eliminating obesity can save more health care money than curing cancer.
