Background In the brain, dopamine (DA) and its receptors have been implicated in a variety of brain functions, including arousal, motor behavior, cognition and reward. Several recent studies have found that dopamine D1 and D2 receptors are involved in the recovery of consciousness from general anesthesia, but the underlying mechanism for this is still unclear. Objective The aim of this study is to discuss the role of dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in the recovery of consciousness from general anesthesia. Content The present review focuses on the structure, signal transduction pathways and expression of central nervous system dopamine D1 and D2 receptors. We also provide an overview about the latest research progress of D1 and D2 receptors in the recovery of consciousness from general anesthesia. Trend Dopamine D1 and D2 receptors are involved in the recovery process of consciousness from general anesthesia. It may provide a new direction for us to profound understanding the underlying mechanism of general anesthesia-induced unconsciousness.
