During his writing of Doctor Zhivago, B. Pasternak spent a long time try- ing to name the novel. He had come up with several different titles before he decided on "Doctor Zhivago". Actually, those descarded titles address a variety of issues of the work including the imagery system of the work, the writer's view of life and death, the narrative space of the novel, and emotional affinity between the hero and the heroine. These discarded titles reflect the author's thematic and artistic concerns from various an- gles. This paper analyzes the novel's themes and other implications by way of investiga- ting into the descarded titles in order that more meanings will be uncovered.
