Yan Wenyu and the Southwest Associated University Library

严文郁先生是我国第一批系统接受现代图书馆学专业教育的图书馆人。抗战期间,他不仅作为骨干参与创建了联大图书馆及其前身长沙临时大学图书馆,还将所学运用于图书馆的经营之中,为联大图书馆构建了一套专业、高效和人性的现代图书馆管理和服务体系,使联大图书馆一跃成为战时中国最好的图书馆之一。此外,他还操持了联大图书馆总管和分管的设立、布置和搬迁等工作,为联大图书馆和联大做出了重要贡献。严先生中途离开联大图书馆的真实原因包括经济困难、馆务不能自主等方面,折射出战时后方大学图书馆人群体的生存实态。

Mr. Yan Wenyu was among the first batch of hbrarians who had received systematic professional education of modern library science. During the period of the war against Japan, he participated, as a core member, in the work of building the Southwest Associated University library and its predecessor Changsha temporary university library. By applying what he had learned to the operation of the library he established for the university a professional, efficient and humane modern library man- agement and service system, and elevated the library to one of the best libraries in China during the war. In addition, he was al- so in charge of the establishment, layout and relocation of the head and branch libraries, thus had made an important contribu- tion for the university library and the university itself. Unfortunately, Mr. Yan left the library later. The cause of his midway leave could be attributed to economic difficulties and the dependent situation of the library at that time, which reflects in some way the living state of university librarians in the rear during the war.
