The dispute between Max Black and Donald Davidson about whether there exists metaphorical meaning is the centralized reflection of the dispute between semantic approach and pragmatic approach in contemporary metaphor research. Black and Davidson try to revise the verification theory of logical positivism in different ways. Their different concepts of meaning have made them give out different answers to the same question. Nevertheless there exists divergence in their interpretations of metaphorical meaning. They both acknowledge metaphor＇s integrity and irreducibility,which render them opposed to the traditional decorative view of metaphor held by Aristotle up to the logical positivists. Together,they have advanced the development of contemporary metaphor research.
