The New Historicism is generally understood as the historicity of texts and the textuality of history. It acknowledges subjectivity of history and rejects "the grand narrative",and in the meanwhile,it recognizes the close connection between history and literature in presenting historical truth and artistic creation. Accordingly, the theory allows literature, historical novels in particular,to have enough space in its own right for characterizing historical figures and moulding historical events. Ian Mc Ewan's novel Black Dogs in many ways embodies the notion in this regard. The novel makes effective use of such narrative skills as unreliable narration, the shift in point of view and fragmentation to present objectively the different memories of Joan and Bernard about their past. The memories mainly include the encounters of black dogs and other personal incidents they together witnessed and experienced. This shows the uncertainties and multi-dimensions of history and past, and their enormous influence on individuals of the "current"generation.
