I Lock My Door Upon Myself,published in 1990,was a novella of Joyce Carol Oates. According to the mouth of heroin Calla＇s granddaughter,the author briefly and convincingly narrates the unusual life of Calla. This article intends to study the rhetorical strategies via Jacobson＇s theory in the text to reveal the theme of the novella——pursuing a sense of belonging; in the meanwhile,it aims to testify that the landscape of metonymy conveys metaphorical meaning and the combination of metaphors constitutes the landscape of metonymy in reverse,jointly and indispensably in favor of the highlights of theme.
