A Discussion on the Earlist Translation of Neo-Confucianism to the West

朱子学是儒学的新发展,被西方称为新儒学(Neo-Confucianism),是具有世界影响的思想学说,很早就走出国门,被译成不同文字传播各国。但其英译相对滞后,19世纪美国传教士在中国广州创办的第一份英文月刊《中国丛报》(Chinese Repository)是第一个将朱子学向西方传播的阵地。文章对英译的概况、译者的身份与目的、翻译的策略与问题等方面进行考察和分析,以期探讨朱子学早期在英语世界的翻译与传播问题。

Zhu Xi of Song dynasty,known as Neo-Confucianism,was introduced and interpreted to different countries throngh various channels. The English version,however,did not appear until 19 thcentury. It was introduced by Chinese Repository,a monthly journal edited by American missionary in 1832,which lasted 20 years and published more than 1200 articles. The paper explores the introduction and translation of Neo-Confucianism to the west in 3 aspects: a general survey,the translator's identity and his translation strategies and problems.
