Explaining Chinese and English Thinking Pattern Differences Based on the Linguistic Characteristics of Modern Chinese and English

王建国、何自然指出,在语用上汉语是过程取向的语言,英语是结果取向的语言。本文借用物理力学的研究成果,进一步指出汉语是心理动能导向的语言,英语是心理势能导向的语言,并由此推导出汉英两种语言和更多思维方式的特征,通过与基于传统文化所推导的传统思维方式特点的参照,指出尽管历经语言与文化的发展,汉英思维方式的差异还是比较稳定的,且会继续影响汉英文化的构建。

According to Wang Jianguo and He Ziran,Chinese is pragmatically process-driven while English is result-driven.Based on this view,the paper finds from the perspective of mechanics that Chinese is a kinetic-energy-oriented language while English a potential-energy-oriented one.This finding helps explain the differences between the two languages and the thinking patterns of the two speech communities.A comparison of the thinking patterns revealed in this paper and the previous corresponding views deduced from the two traditional cultures shows that the distinct features of the thinking patterns remain unchangeable throughout the processes of linguistic and cultural development,which suggests that the thinking patterns of each community will continue to exert their influence upon the development of each culture.
