In 2012, Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology and other institutions conducted trial excavation to the Maji Cave Site in Lingchuan County, Shanxi Province, which revealed three layers of fire use remains distributed in strip shape. Each layer had large amount of charcoal debris mixed, as well as stone products, burnt bones and stones. The stone products were made of flint, limestone, quartzite, quartz, etc., and the types were cores, flakes, stone implements and chunks, broken flakes, chips, etc. The14C data of the fossil samples unearthed from this site showed that the date of the Maji Cave Site is about 35 kaBP, which is the late Paleolithic Age. Through the analyses to the unearthed stone products, burnt bones and fire use remains, it is inferred that the Maji Cave Site is an autochthonous site, which was originally a residential site for making stone implements, butchering, dismembering and cooking animals for food.
