Discussion of the Spring Festival Couplets of Zhang Jian's Number One Scholar's Mansion

张謇成为近代著名实业家后 ,不改其文人墨客本色 ,每临农历岁末喜好自撰春联供“状元府”大门张贴 ,便是一证。观赏存世的23幅“状元府”春联 ,既可领略名联佳对的妙趣 ,又可管窥张謇的思想追求、政治态度以及寄寓联中的亲情、乡情。

Though Zhang Jian was a famous industrialist in modern China, he was, still, a man of letters. Upon the Lunar New Year, he was always fond of writing the Spring Festival couplets, which is proved by the couplets stuck on the door of the Number One Scholar's Mansion House. The 23 existing couplets belonging to the mansion house best manifest Zhang's wit and humor, his political ambition, attitude and his attachment to hometown and relatives .
