This paper centers on a discussion over the complicated meaning and the unique value of the prose created by ZHANG Chengzhi, as well as the misunderstanding it has brought to most readers.It is pointed out that there exist in his prose not only strong ethical viewpoints on the superficials but also meditation on modern human exhaustion and poetic call for life in deep structure.In the final analysis, ZHANG Chengzhi is not an ethical missionary but a poetry composer with remarkably keen insight and highly expressive writing skills.
