“无友不如己者”英译辨析

A Discussion on Translations of “Wu you bu ru ji zhe”

通过对"无友不如己者"的不同英译文予以分析、批评,指出理雅各等汉学家的解释"不结交不如自己的朋友"有悖仁爱的圣人之道,不符合儒家思想,继而从阐释学视角推出切合孔子原意的解读,即避免谈论朋友不如自己的方面。

Through detailed analysis and comparison of the two translations of“wu you bu ru ji zhe”,it is argued,from the per-spective Hermeneutics,that“have no friends not equal to yourself”by James Legge and“to refuse the friendship of all who are not like him”by Arther Waley are,to some extent,misrepresentations of the intended meaning of Confucius. An alternative is given which is more coherent with the source text and Confucianism as a whole.
