While walking in the villages and towns of Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County in May, I could see many houses with high roof ridges, their brick sides darkened with time. They are scattered in parts of modern villages, amid the deeply-colored landscape of this section of Liaoning Province. Mature, full of wisdom and memories of events from years ago, they are like older people. Now emptied of the business of extended families, noisy roosters and the clatter of housekeeping chores, the old ones are more tranquil, but the tiles and courtyards give an inkling of past tales and people.
