Japanese oil painter Fujishima Takeji was well-versed with western painting skills as well as sinology which contributed to the fact that he has the most Chinese disciples at that time. With his life synchronized with the development of modern Japan, he served both as a student of Chinese culture and a tutor for Chinese students. His probe into Chinese culture proved to stand him in good stead throughout his lifetime. He was destined to bond with Chinese forerunners of oil painting in the particular historical backdrop, while his two visits to wartime China had been interpreted variably. Admiration of ancient Chinese culture, discrimination against underdeveloped modern China and sincerity towards his Chinese disciples are characteristic of Fujishima Takeji's Chinese complex.
