In her later years, Chinese American writer Maxine Hong Kingston has shifted her attention from Asian American identity to universal mankind. In her new work The Fifth Book of Peace, Kingston examines her personal trauma, fictional characters' trauma and veterans' collective trauma, exploring the significance of literary writing in transferring traumatic experience to traumatic narrative, in bearing witness to history, and in extending a writer's humanistic caring to mankind. This paper analyzes the genre, content and theme of The Fifth Book of Peace from traumatic theory and perceives it as a text inscribes writing therapy, so as to get a better picture of Kingston's thoughts in her later years as well as the healing function of literature in the post-traumatic era.
